Whole Foods Market® in FLORIDA issues voluntary recall of prepared foods items made with raw onions due to potential health risk

- July 27, 2012 - (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) - Whole Foods Market in the state of Florida only has initiated a voluntary recall of certain fresh food items sold in prepared foods departments, as well as one item sold in seafood departments of their 17 Florida stores. The items are being recalled as they could have been made using raw yellow onions processed by Gills Onions, LLC, which initiated a recall on their product due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

To date, there have been no complaints or illnesses reported to Whole Foods Market or to the Food & Drug Administration involving the products being recalled.

Any of the following items below that were offered in the prepared foods department-either the full service counters and cases, self service hot and cold bars, and/or the prepackaged food sections- contain raw onions and are subject to this recall. Conch salad was the one item offered in the seafood department.

The potentially affected products were prepared and sold at the company's 17 Florida locations only, between July 7, 2012 and July 27, 2012. The stores include: Biscayne, Boca Raton, Coral Gables, Coral Springs, Ft. Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Naples, Palm Beach Gardens, Pembroke Pines, Phillips Crossing, Pinecrest, Plantation, Sarasota, South Beach, Tampa, Wellington and Winter Park.

Customers should dispose of the products and return to their local Florida location with receipt to receive a refund. The FDA states that Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
