Recall Details

Newark, NJ--October 7, 2003 --- Triunfo Import Food Corp. of Newark, N.J. is recalling one pound packages of Queijo tipo Mineiro cheese because they have potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with impaired immune systems.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short term symptoms such as headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The cheese comes in one pound clear plastic packages with expiration dates from September 24 through November 4.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a one pound package of Queijo tipo Mineiro.

The production of the product has been suspended while FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem.

Consumers who have purchased packages of Queijo tipo Mineiro are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the factory at 1-800-859-5196 or Triunfo Import Food Corp. at 973-491-0399.
