State Agriculture Commissioner Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Milk in Macaroons
New York - April 8, 2003 -- State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan L. Rudgers
today warned consumers to avoid eating "Besitos De Coco (Macaroons) Capellan"
due to an undeclared milk protein, an allergen to milk sensitive consumers.
The product is packaged in a 7.5 oz. (213g) plastic tray with UPC number
7 25793 10002 6. "Besitos De Coco (Macaroons) Capellan" was distributed
to retail stores in New York and New Jersey. It was manufactured by Siboney
Bakery, Inc., 5009 Grand Avenue, North Bergen, New Jersey 07047.
Routine sampling by food inspectors for the New York State Department of
Agriculture and Markets revealed the product contained milk protein, an allergen
to milk sensitive consumers, which was not declared on the label.
Undeclared milk products can cause deadly reactions in individuals with
sensitivity to them.
Consumers that have "Besitos De Coco (Macaroon) Capellan" should not
consume the product but return it to the place of purchase.
