Nestlé USA Announces Voluntary Recall of NESQUIK® Chocolate Powder

Date of Recall
2012-11-08

Recall Details
- November 8, 2012 - Nestlé USA announced the voluntary recall of limited quantities of Nestlé NESQUIK® Chocolate Powder in the 10.9, 21.8 and 40.7 ounce canisters. The voluntary recall is limited to only NESQUIK Chocolate Powder, which was distributed nationally. No other varieties of NESQUIK powder or any sizes or flavors of NESQUIK ready-to-drink are affected by this recall.

Nestlé is removing the canisters from distribution because the company was notified by an ingredient supplier, Omya Inc. that it has issued a recall of certain lots of its ingredient, calcium carbonate due to possible presence of Salmonella. Calcium carbonate is used in NESQUIK as an ingredient. There have been no reports of any illnesses or adverse health effects associated with the affected product.

To ensure the safety of consumers, Nestlé is recalling selected NESQUIK Chocolate Powder. The recall is limited to the following sizes, UPC and production codes of NESQUIK Chocolate Powder:

10.9 oz. Chocolate (19 servings) 0 28000 67990 3 2278574810

The affected NESQUIK Chocolate Powder was produced during early October, 2012. To locate the production code, consumers should look on the bottom of the canister, adjacent to the consumer expiration date. All affected products have an expiration date of BEST BEFORE Oct 2014.

Consumers who may have purchased the affected NESQUIK Chocolate Powder should not consume it, but instead should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or contact Nestlé Consumer Services at (800) 628-7679.

The most common symptoms of Salmonella infection are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever, which develop within eight to 72 hours of eating or drinking contaminated food. The illness usually lasts for four to seven days and most people recover without treatment. However, salmonellosis can be severe or even life threatening for infants, older people, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems. Individuals experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention.

Nestlé is dedicated to the health and safety of its consumers. For these reasons, the company initiated this voluntary recall. We apologize to our consumers and sincerely regret any inconvenience created by this incident.

UPC code 2800081320 curdles milk within one hour. Mix it and see for yourself. My toddler has been severely vomiting after drinking this on numerous occasions. Finally putting two and two together realized the nesquik was bad. I mixed up a batch and left it on the counter and the milk was curdled within an hour. Please recall this asap before someone else gets extremely ill.

In case this helps- A production code is what any production/manufacturing company uses to be able to trace ANY of it's products. The production number can tell them what plant location, what day, what shift, and even what machine/conveyor any given product was produced at/on. Example(this is completely an example, I don't know exactly)- the first 3 digits may tell them what plant, next 2 digits may be what day, next 2 what shift, etc. This information is used to determine WHAT products are included in a recall.

My sister bought a can at Sams Club (48.7) and she called the company and they say it is not infected with it. My nephew has been vomiting, fever, and has diarrhea. So how can you guys explain this???

My husband drank this and became very very ill for 5 days. We took him to doctor but by time we did it was almost over. Please dont drink it.He missed 3 days of work and a entire weekend in bed

Posted by Hope everyone feels better

I have the 48.7 canister from Sams club. Had choc milk before bed. my son and i both sick on monday. Thought he had appendicitis his stomach hurt so bad. No sure its the flu, but I was so convinced it wasnt the flu on monday that I actually looked up ecoli and salmonella thinking it was something we ate. Never have I done that before. I was actually blaming it on the local restaraunt we ate at :(. Maybe just the flu, but maybe not.....Hope they figure it out before anyone else gets sick.

I religiously buy the 16 oz sugar-free powder (UPC 2800081320). I had severe diarrhea for about 10 days. I'm POSITIVE it was from the powder.

nestle usually has good products, so this i hope is an isolated incident..perhaps they used a different supplier, and forever will regret this.. thank GOD the container i'm drinking from all week hasn't made me or my crew sick... ours was upc 2800068090 sept2014 #225857482... we consume a lot of nesquick in the large family size... its great stuff... but ...oh well...be safe folks...

I unfortunately have the UPC code that matches. On the flip side, we didn't get sick. My little one and I drink this on a daily basis. Guess I will no longer use but then the next product I use may have the same recall as well. People can really get sick. Why does this keep happening?

Sorry type o...the BEST BY DATE WAS OCT 2014..NOT 2012...SO SHE STATED THAT IF THE BEST BY DATE WAS NOT OCT 2014..it was ok

Posted by kkeith

Hello, we use this product daily, especially my 12 yr old son..I compared our canister size with upc codes that are posted above..our canister size and ups did match but our production code did not..we have had this container since 10/25/12, therefore half the canister has been used daily..to take an extra step, i called Nestles 800# listed above..had to hold for a little while but spoke with a representative..I gave her the size and upc info and she asked me for the production #...ours was not on either list..I asked her if all these sizes, upc's and production numbers were all that were affected..she told me that on the bottom of the canister if it did not have a best by date of OCT 2012..it was ok..the production number is the 10 digit number beside the best by date....I hope this info helps......

I too drink MQ every morning and have diarrhea for 2 weeks. It has experation date of Sept 14. I don't believe what NQ is saying in reguards to the dates they are telling us.

Posted by bullheadgal

I start every morning with a 20 oz glass of Chocolate milk made with Nesquik. I have had moderate diarrhea for about 10 days. I had not thought about the new canister of Quik that I bought at Costco. UPC 2800000117 batch# 2236588016. Now I am seeing several people here mentioning the same batch.

Posted by Anonymous

bummed as well - Quik is my 'drug of choice' and i have it for breakfast and usually for dinner, or as late-nite snack. it's as necessary as toilet paper in my house....hopefully no one will get ill from this.

Posted by jedward

Bummed - i'm kinda paranoid cause i drink nesquik on a daily basis. Can't find out what the date is until after work.

We have a 48oz as well and it is not on the list…no one sick so far but we bought the product only last week.
The problem here is the deregulations for these corporations where they can go offshore to purchase additives that are not regulated by out health regulations. And their cheaper this way.
Basically Nestles is willing to put our children in danger so the CEO can buy another house… They lobbied for such reduced regulations so the CEO and board members are responsible…SICK!

When are we going to throw these 1%ers in prison for knowingly contaminating our food supply? Were done with the Nestlé’s product here since greed has taken down a once well trusted and quality product.

To all those that are sick- it is flu season and so many of you may just be suffering from the flu!! Things happen and we have to just deal with them- my husband has been sick with all the symptoms many of you described and we haven't drunk any Nesquick in the past few weeks. Think about what time of year this is.... many people are sick. If your code is not listed it is probably just fine.

IS ANY INGREDIENTS FROM CHINA ???????????

LIKE OREO MADE IN MEXICO FOR THE SAME HIGH PRICE!

Like the other commenter below, I have the 48.7 oz container marked 2800000117. All of my kids, ages 19, 7, and 5, used this product (which I bought recently at Sam's Club), and all recently had a stomach bug fitting the description of salmonellosis. My youngest is diabetic; he had 10 days' worth of low blood sugars besides the GI symptoms, and that can be exceedingly dangerous. PLEASE ADD THIS PRODUCT CONTAINER TO YOUR RECALL LIST!

Posted by Hosebags

I don't believe any of your bullshit stories, my kids are sick, awful diarrhea etc. Bullshit.

Posted by chela62678

when in doubt throw it away

I have the Sugar Free Kind not in these codes but will be trashing it.

There is no way these are the only affected sizes and upc codes. I, too, have a 48.7 oz container. UPC#2800000117, Product code 2235588016. My 1 year old and 4 year old have had the most horrible smelling diarrhea and vomiting for over a week now. I took them to the doctor and he suggested it was a stomach virus, but I'm fairly comfortable in saying it's actually this nesquik powder! Stomach pains, low grade fever. All the pieces fit. I'm livid!

I don't have any kids at home but my husband likes nestles we looked at the code and we have 1 full can and one 1/2 full but you show another number and I don't seem to find it. where is it located on the can. He drinks quik every day, so it doesn't last long at our home.

I want to hear from Nesquick on here or somwhere that the 48 is OKAY....we have some too and according to others it may not be okay.

Posted by Anonymous

We have 2 48oz cans whats to say that these are not contaminated too?

Posted by Achel

I have a 40.7 oz but it's best before Jul 2014.Try to call the hotline later if its needed to recall.

I was very sick (thought to be food poisoning) recently and had been using the Nesquik (48.7 oz) container.

How solid is the production code? We have a different one than those listed and have had low grade abdominal stuff going on in the family for weeks.
