Mon Chong Loong Trading Corp. Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Sulfites in "Dried Potatoes"

Maspeth, NY - March 25, 2003 -- Mon Chong Loong Trading Corp. of Maspeth, NY is recalling all of its "Nicer Succade Dried Potatoes", because they contain undeclared sulfites. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

The "Dried Potatoes" were distributed in the New York metropolitan area through retail stores.

The product is packaged in uncoded, sealed foil bags, with labelling in Chinese and English. It is a product of China. The IPC number is 6 921585 433493.

There have been no reported illnesses or allergic reactions involving this product as of this date.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors revealed the presence of sulfites in the product which were not declared on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of the "Nicer Succade Dried Potatoes" revealed it contained 20.5 milligrams per serving.
