Innova Nutrition Expands their Recall of Diabeteze Bars Because of Possible Health Risk

February 26, 2009 -- Innova Nutrition of Mill Creek, WA is expanding their recall  to include  all Diabeteze bars with any best by date before but not including 25Nov09 because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.  The product was manufactured using peanut products recalled by Peanut Corporation of American because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.  Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Diabeteze chocolate peanut butter bars were distributed in northwest Costco warehouses in Washington and Oregon.

The bars are sold in boxes of 12/1.5oz bars with blue packaging. The UPC code is  8 50540 00112 4.  The expanded recall includes all bars with the best by dates prior to but not including 25Nov09. The best by label is not on the box, but printed on the bar label itself.

The  recalled Diabeteze bars were manufactured with peanuts from the Georgia and the Texas plant of Peanut Corporation of America and distributed in northwest Costco warehouses.  Peanut Corporation of America has issued a recall for all products manufactured by the Texas plant.  These products were used in manufacturing our bars, and therefore we have extended our recall to all bars with a best by date prior to but not including 25Nov09.

No known illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.  The recall was initiated after it was determined that the peanut pieces in the bar were manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America’s Texas Plant.  Innova Nutrition has informed FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.

Any Diabeteze Bars with a best by prior to but not including 25Nov09 should be returned to any Costco for a refund. The best by label is not on the box, but printed on the bar label itself.
