Georgia Firm Recalls Chicken Products For Possible Listeria Contamination

WASHINGTON, July 21, 2004 - KD Acquisitions I, LLC, a Braselton, Ga., firm, is voluntarily recalling approximately 36,980 pounds of frozen, fully-cooked, chicken products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.The products subject to recall are:
- 14 lb. boxes of "Tyson, FULLY COOKED CHICKEN BREAST FILLET FRITTERS WITH RIB MEAT, 3806." Each box contains 28 oz. packages of "Tyson Family Favorites." Each package contains the best if used by date of "Jul1305." The code P#17933 also appears on each package.
- 20 lb. boxes of "SPARE TIME, FULLY COOKED, Chicken Breast Fillet Fritters with Rib Meat, 3806."
These products were produced on July 13, 2004, and distributed to warehouses in Georgia and Arkansas. According to the company, these products have not reached retail stores.
Also subject to recall are:
- 12 lb. boxes of "AMERICA'S CHOICE, FULLY COOKED - BREADED SEASONED CHICKEN NUGGETS CHOPPED AND FORMED, 07046. Each box contains eight 24 oz. bags. The bags carry the same label as the box. Both the box and bags contain the codes "4195P17933" and "P#17933."

These products were produced on July 13, 2004, and distributed to grocery stores in Maryland and New York. According to the company, 120 lbs may have reached the retail level.
The problem was discovered by the company. FSIS has received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products.
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weak immune systems - infants, the frail or elderly and persons with chronic disease, HIV infection or in chemotherapy.
