El Ranchero Del Sur, LLC Recalls El Ranchero Queso Fresco (Fresh Cheese), Los Corrales Queso Fresco en Hoja de Platano (Fresh Cheese in Banana Leaf), and El Ranchero Queso Oaxaca (String Cheese) Because of Possible Health Risk

- March 16, 2012 - El Ranchero Del Sur, LLC. of South River, New Jersey is recalling El Ranchero Queso Fresco 14 oz. (Fresh Cheese), Los Corrales Queso Fresco en Hoja De Platano 14 oz. (Fresh Cheese In Banana Leaf), El Ranchero Queso Oaxaca 14 oz. and 10 lb. (String Cheese) because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

El Ranchero Queso Fresco, Los Corrales Queso Fresco en Hoja De Platano, and El Ranchero Queso Oaxaca were distributed from 2/23/12 through 3/14/12 through direct delivery to retail stores, supermarkets and restaurants located in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

El Ranchero Queso Fresco (Fresh Cheese) with UPC 88052230013 and Los Corrales Queso Fresco en Hoja De Platano (Fresh Cheese in Banana Leaf) with UPC 880522300037 are packaged in a 14 oz. plastic clamshell. El Ranchero Queso Oaxaca (String Cheese) is packaged in a 14 oz shrink wrap with UPC 880522300068 and 10 lb. plastic loose wrap with UPC 88522300051.

The State of New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services discovered that one of our products, Los Corrales Queso Fresco en Hoja De Platano (Fresh Cheese in Banana Leaf), was contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. El Ranchero Del Sur, LLC. has ceased the production and distribution of these products. The FDA and El Ranchero del Sur, LLC. continue their investigation as to what may have caused the problem.

Consumers who have purchased the products mentioned above should keep products refrigerated and return to the place of purchase for a full refund.
