Consumer Alert: Undeclared Sulfites in Eagle Foods Raisins

Brooklyn, NY -- October 31, 2003 -- New York State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan L. Rudgers today warned sulfite-allergic consumers and asthmatics to avoid consuming “Eagle Foods Raisins” due to the presence of undeclared sulfites in the product.

“Eagle Foods Raisins” are being recalled by Mian & Sons Traders Inc., 6812 8th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11220. “Eagle Foods Raisins” are packaged in an uncoded, 7-ounce, clear plastic container. They were distributed to retail stores in the Queens, New York area.

Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors revealed that the product contained high levels of sulfites, which were not declared on the label.

Sulfites can cause deadly reactions in asthmatics and others suffering sulfite allergies. No illnesses have been reported to date.

Consumers who have purchased “Eagle Foods Raisins” should return them to the place of purchase.
